Fuji by female portratist Mateus Dutra

My name is Mateus Lunardi Dutra and I’m a Brazilian female portraitist. I started portraying women in 2014. I have a great fascination for all the nuances a woman bears with herself. It can be just a glimpse she makes, a slight movement of hands or lips and mouth. All these small and imperceptible things we don’t pay much attention to in our everyday life. Associated with my passion for paintings, I attempt to build portraits which can be resembled to paintings as well. I believe that simplicity is the key to be able to achieve what I want, as simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

I started photographing with a Canon 60D and I’ve never been an expert in terms of technical stuff about photography. I just followed my heart and searched for inspiring people. People I was able to see that they do it with passion before anything else.

During this period with my Canon equipment, there were some things that got on my nerves the most: sharpness at wide aperture and purple fringing and, also, skin tone. No matter how I tried different values on my photometry, these things kept on happening.

As I have never been a person so attached to theory and equipment, I occasionally found out about Fuji when I saw the beautiful x100. Then some months ago, I decided to buy the X-E1 with 18-55mm lens just to try it out. We always start something new as secondary and that’s what happened to me.

I used the X-E1 just once in a while. But curiosity led me to buy an adaptor for Canon lenses. And this was the turning point for my photography: this adaptor made me see the potential the X sensor was able to give me. I became really fascinated by the colors I hadn’t seen before, the details.

Then it made me buy my first portrait lens: the 35mm 1.4. Well, that was the last straw, I didn’t want to think of any other brand but Fuji. All these things that were my pet peeves seemed to be gone when I perceived how powerful Fujinon lenses are, especially at wide apertures. Not to mention the color fidelity. I was simply amazed by it all. It felt I was in another world, I was rediscovering everything.

And since that time, by December 2014, when I switched to Fuji equipment, I’ve been significantly satisfied (sometimes surprised) with all I’ve got. I believe a camera must be a tool for your eye, like a brush, pencil… and Fuji gives that to me every time I shoot. Fuji made me see photography under another perspective, took my photos to a completely different level. And I stopped worrying about equipment, such which lens to buy, or camera. I just don’t worry anymore because the equipment I have meets my needs.
