Two cups of coffee and natural light

I give thanks every day since, in this life of troubles and commitments, I can carry out many activities that I am passionate about. In these quarantine times, these things are not present, it is a good time to value them and, when they come back, to enjoy them even more. Learn to focus our minds mind at that moment, be 100 per cent present, for example: many times we finish a coffee without feeling the taste, the aroma, because our thoughts lead us to worries. We see the empty cup and realize that we took it almost automatically. For that reason, the process of riding a motorcycle, taking photos, and having coffee with a friend is a time to stay focused and enjoy the whole process. It all starts more or less like this.

The first step is receiving or sending a message with more or less with this text “Are you awake?”, Followed by “Yes, where do I find you?”. That’s it, no more is needed. As I like to ride light, I take one body and one lens. If I carry the XF56mm f/1.2 and the weather is likely to rain, I also carry the XF50mm f/2, since if it rains, this lens is WR like the X-T1, 2 or 3 that will allow taking photos in the rain. Regarding the bodies, the only difference between the three cameras that I own is the focus speed, since the three X-Ts have a similar image quality. I am still surprised that, after five years, the X-T1 is still super current, and since 99 per cent of my photography is seen via the Internet, the 16MP are more than enough. At most I have to be more precise in the framing, so as not to cut too much, but if I’m going to take dynamic or speed pictures, that’s where the focus speed of the X-T2 or X-T3 is welcome. What I can’t forget are 2 spare batteries and a memory card. Everything to the bag or backpack, and then the motorcycle.

The good thing about not being a photographer is that I do not have an obligation to return with photographs, it is all for pleasure. If I arrive at the meeting place earlier, I already have the camera ready to take out, since the arrivals of my motorcycle friends are occasions to get very good photos. This particular day we meet by Núñez, a neighbourhood of the City of Buenos Aires, and then we go for a ride. The meeting café is in a corner, the light is hard but manageable, I prepare the exposure compensation to less 1EV, to expose to the highlights and not lose information in the RAW file. Arrivals are unique, and I don’t like missing that moment.

The good thing about having friends for years is that we know each other and that we don’t have to say too much to arrange a scene. With Sergio, in this series of photos, we are at ease with the Café owners and we borrow the coffee machine from them. Thus, we were also able to take photos of the entire process. All shots were made with natural light. When indoors, I try to avoid mixing light sources, all natural or all artificial light. The good thing about photography not being a job is that if you can’t, we don’t take photos. In this case, we were able, with the help of the people in charge of the coffee who let us for a moment turn off the lights, so we only worked with the light that enters through the windows. The white balance I leave it always on automatic, in most cases it works perfectly. In the case of Sergio, it has been so long since we started taking photos that he already knows where to look and how to locate the body, I leave you a few words from him.

Returning to the article, once we take the first photos and the coffee arrives, we leave the camera, it is a moment of chat almost sacred, we dedicate ourselves exclusively to listening to each other. If, after the conversation, we continue taking photos or not, it is not important. Once that moment is over, we pay the bill, put on our helmets, get on our motorcycles and share a few kilometres on the highway, without running… they are unique moments of connection, passing the kilometres without realizing, we only become aware of the distance upon reaching the tolls. If we see a place to take photos, a sign is enough to know what we are talking about, we automatically stop and take the shots. The good thing is that we always find different places, because, besides the place, the time and the light make it look completely different. So the camera is always at hand, easy to locate. And I do not go around a lot, a lens and a body, it is incredible when one gets used to a focal length and sees the frame and the photograph before having the camera in hand.

I always like using long focal lengths, they allow me to separate the subject from the background and take out most of what is distracting, also I always try to put something ahead, and something behind the subject, framing and emphasizing. In general, I try to make a series, with the possibility that the images also work individually. The process of making the image is so beautiful and fluid that there are times when they have to tell me that I am going to fall into a well or that vehicles are coming that could run me over, since looking through the viewfinder I am almost in a process of meditation, time passes without realizing it. And when there is a lot of desire to ride the motorcycle, we take the coffee already prepared from home and the coffee stop with photos (or not) we do it in the middle of nowhere or in the plaza of some town.

If the people from Fuji X Passion allow me, next time, I will be writing to you about when Royal Enfield lent us three motorcycles to celebrate friend’s day.

Todos los días doy gracias, ya que en esta vida de apuros y compromisos, puedo realizar muchas actividades que me apasionan.  En este tiempo de cuarentena esas cosas no están, es un buen momento para valorarlas y cuando vuelvan disfutarlas todavía más. Aprender a enfocar la mente en ese momento, estar al 100 porciento presente, por ejemplo:  Muchas veces terminamos un café sin sentirle el sabor, el aroma, porque los pensamientos nos llevan a las preocupaciones, vemos la taza vacía y nos damos cuenta que lo tomamos casi de forma automática. Por eso el proceso de andar en moto, hacer fotos, y tomar un café con un amigo, es un tiempo para estar enfocados y disfrutar el proceso completo. Todo comienza más o menos así:  

El  primer paso es la recepción o el envío de un mensaje con más o menos con este texto “Estas despierto? ” , A lo que le sigue “siiii, donde te encuentro?”.  Ya está, no es necesario más. Como me gusta andar liviano, tomo un cuerpo y un lente, si llevo el xf56mmf1.2 y el clima está con posibilidades de llover, llevo además el xf50mmf2, ya que si llueve es WR como la XT1, 2 o 3 que me va a permitir tomar fotos bajo la lluvia. En relación a los cuerpos, la única diferencia entre las tres cámaras que poseo, es la velocidad de enfoque, ya que las tres XT tienen una calidad de imagen similar. Me sigo sorprendiendo que después de cinco años  la XT1 sigue super vigente, y como el 99 porciento de mi fotografía es via internet, los 16mp me sobran, a lo sumo tengo que ser más preciso en los encuadres, para no recortar mucho, pero si voy a tomar fotografías dinámicas o en velocidad, ahí es donde es bienvenida la velocidad de enfoque de la Xt2 o Xt3. Eso si, no hay que olvidar 2 baterías de repuesto y una tarjeta de memoria. Todo al bolso o mochila y a la moto. Lo bueno de no ser fotógrafo, es que no tengo la obligación de volver con fotografías, es todo por placer. Si llego antes al lugar de encuentro, ya tengo la cámara lista para sacar, ya que las llegadas de mis amigos en moto son ocasiones para obtener muy buenas fotos. Este día en particular nos encontramos por Núñez, un barrio de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, para después salir a dar una vuelta. El café del encuentro es en  una esquina, la luz dura pero manejable, preparo la compensación de exposición a menos 1EV, para exponer a las luces altas y no perder información en el archivo RAW. Las llegadas son únicas y no me gusta perderme ese momento. Lo bueno de tener amigos de años es que nos conocemos y que no tenemos que decir demasiado para ordenar una escena. Con Sergio, en esta serie de fotos,  tenemos confianza con la gente del café y les pedimos prestada la máquina. Así, además pudimos hacer las fotos del proceso completo. Todas las tomas son con luz natural. En interiores  trato de evitar mezclar, o todo luz natural o todo luz artificial, lo bueno de no ser la fotografía un trabajo es que  si no se puede, no sacamos fotos. En este caso pudimos  con la ayuda de las personas encargadas del café que nos dejaron por un instante apagar las luces, así solamente trabajamos con la luz que ingresa por las ventanas. El balance de blancos lo dejo siempre en automático, en la mayoría de las ocasiones funciona perfectamente. En el caso de Sergio, hace tanto tiempo que sacamos fotos que ya sabe para donde mirar y como ubicar el cuerpo,  les dejo unas palabras de el.

“me toca estar del otro lado del lente, nada para decirnos, esa simbiosis, entre dos amigos, que recorren kms, cafés, familias  y fotografía desde hace mas de 15 años, aquel mensaje tempranero es suficiente para empezar en algún café, donde el dia empieza a dispararse, entre diafragmas, planes, tomas, clicks de todo tipo, improvisando al igual que el camino a recorrer ese dia, amo esos sábados donde se juntan las pasiones, los afectos, las luces, las sombras .”

Retomando  el artículo, una vez que realizamos las primeras fotos y  llega el café, dejamos la cámara, es un momento de charla casi sagrado,  nos dedicamos exclusivamente a escucharnos. Si después de la charla seguimos sacando fotos o no, no es lo importante. Una vez terminado ese momento, pagamos la cuenta, nos colocamos el casco, subimos a nuestras motos y compartimos unos kilómetros por la autopista, sin correr… son momentos únicos,  de conexión que pasan los kilómetros sin darnos cuenta, solo tomamos conciencia de la distancia  al llegar a los peajes. Si vemos  algún lugar para tomar fotos basta una seña para saber de qué estamos hablando, automáticamente paramos y realizamos las tomas. Lo bueno es que siempre encontramos lugares distintos, porque además del lugar, la hora y la luz hacen que se vea completamente diferente.  Por eso siempre la cámara a mano, fácil de ubicar. Y no doy muchas vueltas, un lente y un cuerpo, es increíble cuando uno se acostumbra a una distancia focal ya ve el encuadre y la fotografía antes de tener la cámara en la mano. Siempre me gustan las focales largas, me permiten separar al sujeto del fondo y sacar la mayor parte de lo que distrae, además siempre trato de colocar algo adelante,  y algo atrás del sujeto, enmarcando y dando énfasis. En general trato de hacer series, con la posibilidad de que las imágenes funcionen también de forma individual.  El proceso de hacer la imagen es tan lindo y fluido que hay veces que me tienen que avisar que me voy a caer en un pozo o que vienen vehículos que me pueden atropellar, ya que mirando por el ocular estoy casi en un proceso de meditación, el tiempo pasa sin darme cuenta. Y cuando hay muchas ganas de andar en moto, el café lo llevamos preparado desde casa y  la parada de café con fotos (o no) la hacemos en el medio de la nada o en la plaza de algun pueblo. 

Si la gente de Fuji X Passion me permite, la próxima, les escribo cuando Royal Enfield nos prestó tres motos para festejar  el dia del amigo.
