Premium/ Gear alone won’t make you a better photographer
I have been inspired to write this article (or at least approach the subject in this form) recently by a number of recent interactions I have had with “aspiring” photographers online, as well as the video Is Photography Dead? by Tony & Chelsea Northrup on YouTube. Tony brings to the forefront a point that is undoubtedly more prevalent in recent years and notably in our community by the explosion of interest in the Fuji X100 series and Fujifilm in general. There are so many videos floating around about how the X100 has been a savior to many, injecting creativity into their work. The problem with this is that the people have done the math, put 2+2 together and got 6. People are now equating the object itself as the source of “magic” rather than the inanimate tool that it is. To put it in simple terms, people are looking to technology for solutions to creative problems.
I almost went with a clickbait title of my own on this one but I know for a fact having the right gear can provide solutions for many issues photographers face. I am not so silly to think that gear does not matter, it certainly does, and I hope that what I do here at Fuji X Passion will educate and inspire people to get the right gear for them and, as such, open those creative doors. I recently had the great fortune of interviewing Oren Soffer (in)famous for using the $3,500 Sony FX3 to shoot an 80 million dollar Hollywood film, The Creator. I asked him where the money is best spent for optimum output if not the camera? His answer was no surprise; the camera doesn’t matter as much as what you point it at.
