Premium/ Beyond Social Media
With the advent of mobile phone photography, Instagram and other social media platforms, the notion that visual arts (especially photography) are tied and constrained to these mediums has not only become the popular thought but the driving force behind many people’s decision to take up photography. With phrases such as “Banger” and “Instagram Worthy” cemented in our lexicon, I wonder what damage it does to the perception of what photography fundamentally is. As all things, I can wonder and lament, or I can take action. I want to talk about the photographic community in 2024, beyond social media.
It’s worth noting, first and foremost, I am not discrediting the use of social media. Many photographers I have met have been connections from Instagram. What I want to talk about is how photography can serve you when you forget that dopamine hit of getting a like from a stranger and how it can forge bonds between people. Unfortunately, I cannot recall who, but as was once said, “My camera is the greatest passport I have” and not a truer word can be said for what photography is. Just like music, it is a language that transcends all barriers.
Everyone comes to photography for a different reason, mine was to document my travels. In a sense, that fundamentally still stands true to this day. Had I not taken up photography, without a doubt I would have seen perhaps 30% of what I otherwise would have. When walking past an alley (or driving past a small town whilst on the road) that a normal person would not take a second look at, with my camera I am intrigued to see what I can find, perhaps some good light or a stranger with a story and as such memories are made. Whatever it is that drew you to photography, it has a human element.
