Premium/ Moments of Silence
The idea to start documenting Czech cemeteries, especially the old ones (sometimes disappearing) with historical tombstones, has been growing in me for a long time. The last impulse was the fact that one old cemetery where my friend and I used to go as teenagers to meditate and discuss (and which at that time had been disused for over 80 years) does not exist today (except for the last few tombstones).

I see cemeteries as such witnesses of history, places of memories of past generations. Places of silence and peace, in the case of old cemeteries, also as places with a specific atmosphere. And I have always liked to walk through them. At the same time, they are a reminder of human transience and the desire to leave at least some trace of oneself. That’s exactly what I thought when I stood in front of the monumental tombstone of a farmer from Ostřešany (who had to save money for years, maybe his whole life, to be able to have such a tomb built for his family).
From time to time, I have taken a picture cemetery before, but never with the idea of creating a complete series. That changed some time ago, and so I went from thought to action.

First, I went to places I already knew. But it didn’t take long before I sat down with a map and started looking for small cemeteries around where I live. I was surprised at how many small cemeteries I found. I immediately started going around them to see what I could find there and what kind of shots I would discover on them.
